Boston Health Firm Buys 2 More Nonprofit Hospitals

The Boston company set up last year to run a chain of formerly nonprofit Catholic hospitals has bought two more community medical centers, but doctors at one of the facilities might fight the deal, according to The Boston Globe.
Steward Health Care System, which was established by the private-equity firm Cerberus when it took over eastern Massachusetts’ six Caritas Christi hospitals, announced its purchase of Saints Medical Center in Lowell on Monday, three days after unveiling a deal for Morton Hospital and Medical Center in Taunton. Both would become for-profit institutions.
The president of an association that represents about 200 doctors affiliated with Saints said the group opposed the deal and called Steward “the single worst [buyer] for us” because the firm has its own doctors’ group, unlike two nonprofit suitors for the hospital.
