Calif. Drops Bill to Force Hospitals to Detail Charity Care

California lawmakers have shelved legislation that would have required nonprofit hospitals to provide details on their provision of charity care to justify maintaining tax-exempt status, reports the Associated Press.

The bill failed to pass in several votes on Thursday and was among measures held over for next year as the state Assembly adjourned the following day. It was supported by labor groups, which said big nonprofit medical centers receive more in tax breaks than they offer in free and discounted treatment, but the California Hospital Association warned that the new rules would lead to less rather than more charity care.
