Calif. School District Asks Parents to Make Up Budget Cuts

A Southern California school system is asking parents to make annual contributions to cover the nearly $5-million a year it will lose to state spending cuts, says the La Cañada Valley Sun.
The La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation recommends a $2,500 yearly contribution per household, which would allow the La Cañada Unified School District to maintain spending and class sizes at 2008 levels in the wake of state reductions.
The foundation, which raises private money to support the school system, held a town hall last week at which schools officials laid out the system’s fiscal problems, noting the district’s relative wealth and high-performing schools make it ineligible for many education grants and government programs.
