Calif. School Districts Form Nonprofit to Promote Change

Seven California school districts on Monday announced the formation of a nonprofit organization to push for changes they say unions and education officials have resisted, the Associated Press reports.
The new California Office of Education Reform, consisting of the Clovis, Fresno, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Sanger districts, will be started with $3-million in foundation money.
The group seeks to pursue accountability and review procedures for teachers, common standards for English and math instruction, and other changes as part of California’s bid for federal money from the Obama Administration’s Race to the Top program.
