Calif. Senate Panel OKs Bill That Would Revoke Boy Scouts’ Tax Break

A California Senate committee advanced state legislation Wednesday aimed at pressuring the Boy Scouts of America to abandon the organization’s ban on openly gay members, writes The Sacramento Bee.
The Governance and Finance Committee voted 5-2 along party lines, with Democrats supporting the bill to revoke the state tax exemption of any youth organization that discriminates on the basis of gender identity, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation. The measure now goes to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
The Boy Scouts’ National Council is scheduled to vote next month on a proposal to rescind the prohibition on gays, lesbians, and transgender individuals serving as members or troop leaders.
