Calif. Senate Votes to Strip Boy Scouts of Tax Break

The California Senate has passed a bill that revokes the Boy Scout of America’s nonprofit status because it does not permit the participation of openly gay adults writes The Sacramento Bee.

Despite the Boy Scouts landmark decision to lift the ban on gay youths, state Senator Ricardo Lara has championed legislation that calls for revoking the tax-exempt status of youth groups that discriminate against participants on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identification.

The bill passed the state Senate 27-9, just enough to satisfy the two-thirds support needed to pass a measure that would change the state’s tax code. The bill now advances to the state Assembly.
