California Chapter of Acorn Breaks Ranks and Forms New Agency

The California chapter of Acorn is separating from the parent group and will form a new nonprofit community organization, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Amy Schur, former head of California Acorn, said the scandals plaguing the national group had become “a significant distraction” and that state members, who accounted for about an eighth of Acorn’s national membership, wanted greater local control and financial transparency.

The new group incorporated this week as the Alliance of Californians for Community Development and is seeking federal nonprofit status. It will have a similar mission, retain many of the same staff members, and be supported by the same donors, Ms. Schur said.
