California Dermatologist Gives Record $14-Million Gift

March 24, 2011

Bakersfield College in California will receive $14-million, thought to be the largest gift from an individual to a community college, from a local dermatologist whose identity was to have remained secret until a formal announcement Thursday, writes The Californian.

Norman Levan, 95, of Bakersfield, confirmed that he was the donor after the information leaked Wednesday. Most of the money will go toward scholarships, allowing the two-year school to increase annual financial aid to students to $1-million.

Dr. Levan gave $5.7-million to the college in 2006 to build a center for the humanities and an institute to offer courses to older students.
