CARE USA Executive Speaks on Leadership and Job Interviews

Helene Gayle,, the chief executive of the anti-poverty group CARE USA, spoke about her leadership style and dispensed career advice in an interview with The New York Times.

Ms. Gayle discussed the impact her upbringing had in developing her leadership style, saying her mother’s encouragement for her and her siblings to speak up got her involved in community life from a young age. In addition, she said, her managerial roles at the Centers for Disease Control made her better able to delegate and showcase the contributions of others.

In discussing the work environment she has built at CARE USA, Ms. Gayle said she has worked to foster a culture of openness, leadership, and accountability. “We can’t have people who are competitive and just thinking about their turf,” she said. “I like to think of it as people needing to be dual citizens.”
