Catholic Nonprofit Group Loses Appeal on Gay Adoption

Britain’s last adoption service affiliated with the Catholic Church has lost its appeal seeking an exemption to laws barring discrimination against homosexuals, the BBC reports.

The regulatory Charity Commission said Thursday that gay people are suitable parents and that the adoption agency Catholic Care could not limit services to gays on religious grounds.

Catholic Care was the last of Britain’s church-linked adoption charities to resist the antidiscrimination law enacted in 2007. The remainder have severed church ties or given up child-placement services, in keeping with prior Charity Commission rulings.

Thursday’s decision was prompted by a March High Court order that the commission reconsider its previous stance on Catholic Care.
