Chicago Implements Water Fee for Nonprofits

Chicago will introduce water and sewer charges for nonprofit organizations, among a battery of measures aimed at wiping out a $635.7-million budget shortfall, community newspaper the Gazette reports.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel said last month that Chicago could “no longer afford” to waive service fees for charities. The fees will be phased in over four years, with the revenue earmarked for rebuilding the city’s aging water and sewer infrastructure.
Several charities told the monthly newspaper that having to pay tens of thousands of dollars a year in water fees will deeply affect their provision of services.
