Chicago Theater Shortens Season to Bring in Rental Income

One of Chicago’s most acclaimed nonprofit theaters will shorten its traditional five-show season to three in 2013-14 while trying to boost revenue by renting its stage to other companies, writes The New York Times.
Victory Gardens Theater has struggled for years with deficits and uneven ticket sales. Artistic director Chay Yew said Monday that the shortened season and resident-theater program represented “concrete steps to be fiscally responsible and stabilize without compromising on our mission.”
Mr. Yew said Victory Gardens plans to resume putting on five productions for its 40th anniversary season in 2014-15. He also announced the formation of a new advisory board for the theater, with prominent playwrights Eve Ensler, David Henry Hwang, and Tony Kushner among the members.
