Chinese Reproach Companies’ Sichuan Quake Pledges

China’s blogosphere has not been kind regarding the charitable pledges of some Chinese companies after the recent earthquake in Sichuan Province, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Comments on the popular Weibo microblog show users are underwhelmed by local firms’ generosity, after Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Tencent Holdings Ltd. each pledged $800,000. Tencent has since raised its donation to $3.2-million.

Foreign companies, which were criticized for doing too little after the 2008 quake in Sichuan, are now drawing praise. Samsung Electronics Co., for example, has said it would donate $9.7-million. Apple promised $8.1-million.
