Columbia U. Hospital Patrons Give $40-Million for Cancer Work

Columbia University announced on Monday a $40-million donation from former Sysco Corporation executive Herbert Irving and his wife, Florence, to finance a new cancer center, writes the The Wall Street Journal.
The Irvings are longtime benefactors of the Columbia University Medical Center, giving the hospital nearly $200-million over a span of decades to support scholarships, cancer research, and other programs.
The Journal article profiles the New York couple, who met during the Great Depression and have been married for 70 years. Mr. Irving co-founded Sysco, which distributes products to food-service companies.
