Conn. Charities Say $20-Million Infusion Welcome but Insufficient

Connecticut nonprofits are welcoming a new $20-million state grant program for health and social-service groups to make infrastructure investments but say more money is needed after years of flat financial support, the Associated Press reports.

The fund announced this week by Governor Dannel P. Malloy will help charities with state contracts implement energy-conservation measures, technological upgrades, and other projects to cut their expenses, freeing up money to enhance services. The governor said he expects about $35-million in applications for the program.

Ron Cretaro, executive director of the Connecticut Association of Nonprofits, said providers were hoping for cost-of-living adjustments to state contracts, which have been small or nonexistent in recent years. He called the grant fund “a pretty positive alternative” but added, “We would obviously like to see more.”
