Corruption Alleged at N.Y. Theater Group

A Troy, N.Y., theater group that receives nearly as much state money as all other New York stage organizations combined has been accused of corruption, mismanagement, and nepotism by state officials, says The New York Times.
A report by the state’s inspector general, Joseph Fisch, alleges the New York State Theater Institute’s artistic director, Patricia Snyder, steered hundreds of thousands of dollars to herself and family members in the form of jobs, perks, and questionable expenses. Ms. Snyder’s lawyer denied any wrongdoing and characterized the report as “monumental nonsense.”
The institute, a state authority that focuses on bringing theater to children, received $3.1-million from the state budget last year. The state spent $3.7-million on grants for 294 other theater groups across New York.
