‘Crowdfunding’ Sites Add Avenue for Superstorm Sandy Giving

With Superstorm Sandy, “crowdfunding” Web sites have emerged as the latest technological tool for quick, simplified giving, according to NPR.

The American Red Cross embraced online microphilanthropy in its Sandy fundraising, mounting campaigns on IndieGogo and CrowdRise, while another site, GoFundMe, has been home to smaller efforts like that of writer Jenny Adams, who raised thousands of dollars to help friends and neighbors in her Lower Manhattan neighborhood after posting a photograph of her flooded street.
