Durham, N.C., Nonprofits Brace for Increased Demand

With the state’s extended federal unemployment benefits about to expire, nonprofit leaders from already strapped homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and employment agencies in Durham, N.C., expect to see an increased demand for services, writes The Herald-Sun.

Ryan Fehrman, executive director of the Durham’s Genesis Home, which provides shelter for homeless families said that the shelter already has a waiting list. “Anybody that loses their unemployment benefits that then is evicted or foreclosed on, folks that potentially wind up requiring shelter, the line is already long and it’s only going to get longer apparently,” he said.
