Entrepreneur Plans Massive Maine Land Giveaway

The conservationist Roxanne Quimby, founder of the natural-cosmetics firm Burt’s Bees, plans to donate more than 70,000 acres of wild land in Maine’s North Woods to the federal government to create a new national park, according to the Associated Press.
Ms. Quimby would make the donation in five years to mark the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. The federal agency is evaluating the proposal, which a spokesman called “exciting.”
The proposed Maine Woods National Park would be the first large new national park created since the early 1980s.
Ms. Quimby, who has clashed with Maine sportsmen over her barring of hunting and snowmobiling on her land, aims to set aside another 30,000 acres to be operated like a state park, with such activities allowed. “There’s enough land that we can all get what we want,” she said.
