Ex-Bronx Charity Chief Charged in Alleged $900,000 Theft

The former executive director of a South Bronx housing and social-service agency was arrested Wednesday and charged with stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the nonprofit group, The New York Times and the New York Daily News report.
Prosecutors said Yolanda Gonzalez, who led Nos Quedamos (We Stay) from 2005 to 2011, used company checks and credit cards and ATM withdrawals to drain nearly $900,000 from the charity. She faces up to 15 year in prison if convicted of grand larceny, attempted grand larceny, and falsifying business records.
Ms. Gonzalez, the daughter of late Nos Quedamos founder Yolanda Garcia, pleaded not guilty. She was suspended without pay by the charity’s board in 2011 amid questions about financial irregularities and hiring of relatives, which led to a criminal inquiry by the state attorney general.
