Ex-NFL Player’s Charity Reportedly Facing Grand-Jury Inquiry

A federal grand jury is investigating former Green Bay Packers safety LeRoy Butler’s charity, which has continued to raise money for the past decade while filing only one return to the Internal Revenue Service, according to Gannett Wisconsin Media.

Mr. Butler, a Packer from 1990 to 2001 and a key member of Green Bay’s 1996 Super Bowl winners, has also drawn criticism from watchdog groups for taking fees of up to $10,000 to appear at LeRoy Butler Foundation events and advertising commercial ventures on the charity’s Web site.

Federal prosecutors would not confirm the investigation, but the Gannett Wisconsin Media Investigative Team obtained subpoenas ordering a Weston, Wisc., cleaning firm and an affiliated charity to provide documents related to their work with Mr. Butler in connection with a grand-jury proceeding.

The former player said he was unaware of the criminal investigation but that his organization is “fully complying with all requirements relating to our foundation and have outside experts engaged.”
