Ex-Worker at Faith Nonprofit Says Divorce Led to Firing

A Michigan woman has filed a wrongful-termination suit against a Christian nonprofit organization she says fired her because her marriage failed, writes the Grand Rapids Press.

Alyce Conlon had worked for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship since 1986, serving as spiritual director at the organization’s Grand Rapids office from 2004 until she was let go in December 2011. The charity operates ministries at universities across the country.

According to the suit filed last week in U.S. District Court, Ms. Conlon was placed on paid leave early in 2011 after informing supervisors that her marriage was in trouble. After counseling and other steps mandated by the charity did not lead to a reconciliation, she was fired. She alleges that two male colleagues kept their jobs with the nonprofit even as they underwent separation, divorce, and remarriage.
