Family of Young Boston Victim to Field Charity Marathon Team

The family of Martin Richard, an 8-year-old boy killed in last year’s Boston Marathon bombings, has launched a charity that aims to field a team of runners for the 2014 race, according to The Boston Globe and The Wall Street Journal.
The Martin W. Richard Charitable Foundation will invest in education, athletics, and community programs and is recruiting 15 to 20 runners to race under the “Team MR8″ banner in the April 21 marathon. Participants must commit to raising $7,500 for the foundation, which has a pending application for nonprofit status.
Martin was one of three people killed in the April 15, 2013, attack. The family, from Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood, was watching the end of the race when the second of two blasts went off near the finish line. Martin’s younger sister, Jane, lost a leg, and their parents were severely injured.
