Firm Finds That Giving Is Up Among Small and Midsize Foundations

Countering the overall downward trend in giving last year, the number and size of grants of less than $1-million increased by 15 percent in 2009, according to Foundation Source, a company that provides services for small and medium-size philanthropies.

The firm based its assessment on data collected as it processed grants from nearly 700 client foundations.

Andrew Bangser, Foundation Source’s president, asserted that the Foundation Center’s 2010 report on giving, which found an overall drop in giving, “was skewed toward larger, institutional foundations” and thus did not reflect increased grant making by smaller organizations.
