Group’s Plan for High-Rise N.Y. Nursing Home Sparks Protests

The nonprofit operator of one of New York’s largest nursing homes is running into local opposition in its bid to develop a pioneering “non-institutional” facility for the elderly, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Jewish Home Lifecare wants to give developers its huge, hospital-style complex on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in exchange for a smaller nearby parcel. The deal would bring the organization “tens of millions of dollars,” according to Audrey Weiner, the group’s chief executive, and provide a site for an innovative high-rise facility modeled on the “Green House” concept of housing the frail elderly in more home-like surroundings.

Neighbors of the proposed nursing home say it would add to congestion in the area, which is already seeing significant redevelopment. Others argue that noise from the nearby police and fire stations would upset elderly residents.
