Groups That Face Federal Budget Cuts Aim for Conservative Hearts and Minds

April 5, 2011 | Read Time: 1 minute

Nonprofit organizations that are the targets of federal budget cuts are trying to fend them off with campaigns that appeal to conservative viewpoints, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Organizations associated by many on the right with a liberal agenda, such as legal-aid, social-service, and community-action groups and public TV stations, seek to sway conservatives by arguing that their mission is in tune with the intent of the nation’s founders or reflects local decision-making, both ideas on which many GOP legislators campaigned.

David Bradley, head of the National Community Action Foundation, said its members are emphasizing to lawmakers that their boards are community-based and often include Republican officials and business leaders. “This is not big government, and it’s also not welfare,” he said.
