Harlem Arts School Closes

Officials at the Harlem School of the Arts, in New York, say they are out of money and have shuttered the nearly 50-year-old school, The New York Times reports.
The nonprofit school’s Board of Directors on Thursday sent parents an e-mail message stating they were closing the institution through April 10 because of a lack of financing, while the board determines whether to close the school permanently. Some parents are accusing the school’s leaders of negligence, while school officials have blamed the recession and declining donations for its fiscal troubles.
The school receives most of its income from tuition, private donations, and government grants. Board members say the school needs to find at least $500,000 to remain open through the end of the school year.
