Head of Chicago Housing Group Makes $685,000

The president of a nonprofit developer of affordable housing in Chicago was paid about $685,000 in 2008 and has borrowed nearly a half-million dollars from the agency for her own property purchases, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Christine M.J. Oliver has received more than $500,000 a year since 2002 from the Chicago Dwellings Association and its nonprofit management company, which she also heads. The association runs four apartment buildings for low- and moderate-income residents, some of whom have sued the organization for allegedly failing to keep up one of the properties.

Housing and nonprofit experts said Ms. Oliver’s compensation is far above the norm for chief executives of other nonprofit housing corporations. Ms. Oliver did not comment for the article. The organization’s board said in a statement that Ms. Oliver had rescued the group from near-bankruptcy and made it financially sound.
