Health-Care Deal Could Exempt Nonprofit Insurers From New Taxes

The health-care overhaul expected to be approved by the Senate this week contains a provision to exempt some nonprofit health insurers from new taxes intended to pay for the plan, says The Wall Street Journal.

The exemption, part of a compromise aimed at solidifying Democratic votes for the bill, would cover nonprofit insurance companies that meet certain qualifications, such as spending 92 percent of premiums on health-care expenses or providing guaranteed-issue coverage to people who can’t get insurance elsewhere.
