Health Policy Expert to Replace Nancy Brinker as Komen CEO

After a 10-month search, the Susan G. Komen Foundation has named a top National Academy of Sciences official as its new chief executive, replacing founder Nancy Brinker at the helm of the nation’s largest breast-cancer charity, Reuters and The Washington Post report.
Judith A. Salerno, a nationally recognized health policy and research expert who leads the academy’s Institute of Medicine, will take office on September 9. Ms. Brinker will serve as Komen’s chair of global strategy, focusing on mission and development issues, and will report to Ms. Salerno, the charity said.
Komen announced that Ms. Brinker would vacate the CEO role in August 2012, six months after it was enveloped in controversy over an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to cut off grants to Planned Parenthood. Since then, the charity has seen a decline in participation and revenue at its signature fundraising races and walks, and earlier this month it canceled a raft of 2014 events in major cities.
