Houston Tops List of Best-Performing Nonprofits

Houston tops watchdog group Charity Navigator’s latest list of U.S. urban areas with the best-performing nonprofit organizations, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The city rose from second place in the previous Charity Navigator ratings, in 2010. Kansas City, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Portland, Ore., rounded out the top five in the new survey, which looked at assets, contributions, expenses, and accountability at thousands of nonprofits in the country’s 30 biggest philanthropic markets. Orlando, Fla., ranked last.
Pittsburgh tumbled to 16th place after ranking first in the 2010 list. Sandra Miniutti of Charity Navigator said the decline was most likely due to Pittsburgh charities’ sluggish revenue growth, which ranked below the national median rate.
