How a Maryland Charity Handles Online Giving Fees

May 3, 2010 | Read Time: 1 minute

Valerie Lambert of Bilou Enterprises recently sent the following note as a response to our recent post about the fees associated with giving through Facebook and Twitter.

Here’s what Ms. Lambert had to say:

When I teach online giving techniques, I boast about how The House of Ruth Maryland, while using third-party sofware from Network for Good, has a clever way to encourage donors to pay for the 3-percent fee on its online giving form.

The organization explains that the fee exists, and that 97 percent of a donation will go to the organization.

It then gives donors two options:

1. Add 3 percent to their total gift so that 100 percent of their intended donation goes to support the charity.

2. Deduct 3 percent so that 97 percent of the donation supports the charity.

This is a wonderful strategy not only to cover expenses, but to teach the donor about something they will most likely pay for but otherwise would not know about.
