In a special report on social entrepreneurship, the business magazine Inc. profiles six organizations and the business models they have adopted to mix causes and corporate missions.
The section includes information about B Corporations, socially responsible firms, income-generating nonprofits, and other mechanisms for injecting entrepreneurship into social missions.
Inc. also highlights success stories such as Chicago’s Brenda Palms Barber, who spun off a for-profit job-training business from her nonprofit dedicated to finding work for ex-prison inmates, and the San Francisco literacy charity 826 National, which was able to set up a tutoring center in a retail-zoned neighborhood by opening it inside a whimsical pirate-supply store.
