In the Arts: Longtime Music-Festival Director Dies in Crash; Plus Other Arts News

Mark P. Malkovich III, the long-serving director of the Newport Music Festival, in R.I., was killed in a one-car accident in Minnesota on Sunday, writes the Associated Press. The Minnesota State Patrol said the 79-year-old’s car went off the road and rolled several times.

And in other music news, the conductor Emmanuel Villaume has announced his plans to step down from his position as director of opera and orchestra at the Spoleto Festival, in Charleston, S.C., at the end of the festival’s current season, the Charleston City Paper says.

Meanwhile, the American Repertory Ballet, in New Brunswick, N.J., has let go its artistic director and its executive director as part of cost-saving measures, reports the Star-Ledger newspaper. The ballet company also plans to cut performances next season.
