In the Arts: New Calif. Cultural Group Urges Candidates to Focus on Arts Issues

October 13, 2010 | Read Time: 1 minute

A coalition of cultural organizations and arts donors is hoping to raise the profile of arts issues in California’s tight gubernatorial race, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The nonpartisan Arts in the California Governor’s Race campaign is touting the fiscal role cultural organizations play in the state—such as employing some 160,000 full- and part-time workers and producing $5.4-billion for the economy—as it seeks greater public support of the arts and arts education.

In other arts news, Nashville’s Fisk University has proposed a new approach to selling a share of its art collection in hopes of winning court approval for the deal, The Tennessean writes.

The plan, submitted Friday, removes language that could have allowed Fisk’s proposed partner, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, in Arkansas, to slowly buy the entire $73-million collection of works donated by the artist Georgia O’Keeffe.

The university says it can no longer afford the cost of maintaining the collection, which includes works by Cezanne, Picasso, and Ms. O’Keeffe, and is seeking court permission to set aside the late benefactor’s wish that the entire collection should remain in Nashville.
