Kansas to Comply With Order to Restore Planned Parenthood Funds

Kansas is appealing a judge’s rejection of a new law stripping funds from the state’s Planned Parenthood clinics but in the meantime will continue providing the aid, reports the Associated Press.

In a statement Wednesday, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said the state “intends to immediately comply” with the court but “will continue to pursue reversal of this order on appeal.”

On Tuesday a federal judge ordered the state to resume channeling federal family-planning dollars to Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri.

Planned Parenthood sued the state after it cut off the aid under a new law that directs the federal money to public-health agencies and hospitals rather than nonprofit clinics.

The Kansas law was one of a series passed by state legislators nationwide to curb government aid to organizations that also provide abortions. The federal money does not cover abortion services but pays for birth control, cancer screenings, and other reproductive-health services for low-income clients.
