Knight Study Is Bullish on Nonprofit Newsrooms’ Finances
October 30, 2013
A report issued Tuesday by the Knight Foundation paints a promising picture of the financial prospects for well-run nonprofit journalism operations, Poynter.org writes.
Knight, which has provided funds for ProPublica, MinnPost, and other online newsrooms, analyzed 18 organizations selected for good practices and found they collectively boosted revenue by 30 percent from 2010 to 2012. Fourteen of the groups broke even or were in the black last year.
Echoing other recent studies of nonprofit journalism efforts, the Knight report found that flourishing sites are now drawing donations from individuals and smaller local foundations and generating revenue from advertising, sponsorships, and events.
