Larceny Charges Loom for Axed N.Y. Charity Chief Rapfogel

The longtime leader of the Metropolitan New York Council on Jewish Poverty, who was fired by the charity earlier this year amid allegations of financial improprieties, is expected to be charged with grand larceny, according to The New York Times.

Citing a source with knowledge of the case, the Times says William E. Rapfogel was to surrender on Tuesday morning and be arraigned later in the day on larceny and money-laundering charges stemming from the alleged theft of about $1-million from the Metropolitan Council, one of New York’s most influential social-service organizations.

Mr. Rapfogel had led the council for 21 years when the board fired him in August. He has been under investigation by state officials for allegedly conspiring with someone at the charity’s insurance broker to pad its premium payments, with the extra money funneled to Mr. Rapfogel or used for campaign contributions for the council’s political supporters.
