Late Actress’s Foundation Cuts Off Fund Raising Amid Questions

A foundation operated by the husband and mother of the late actress Brittany Murphy is suspending fund raising following news that it is not properly registered as a charity, the New York Daily News writes, citing reports from Us magazine and TMZ.com.
The Brittany Murphy Foundation had been collecting donations for children’s arts education for a month even though it has not yet received charity status from the Internal Revenue Service or the state of California. The organization announced on its Web site on Sunday that it would take no more donations until its status is resolved.
Ms. Murphy died in December at age 32 of pneumonia exacerbated by prescription-drug intoxication, according to a coroner’s report. The charity was being overseen by her widower, Simon Monjack, and her mother, Sharon Murphy.
