Leader of Women’s Fund Honored

The award: The Robert W. Scrivner Award for Creative Grant Making, which annually recognizes an individual grant maker.

Who gives it: The Council on Foundations

What the winner receives: A $10,000 award

This year’s winner: Kavita N. Ramdas, chief executive of the Global Fund for Women, in San Francisco. Since 1987, the organization has awarded more than $71-million to 3,800 women’s organizations in 167 countries.

Why she won: Diane Kaplan, chief executive of the Rasmuson Foundation, in Anchorage, who led the award-selection committee, cited Ms. Ramdas’s push to increase access to education for girls in developing countries, and her reputation among those who nominated her as “a very humble person who can get things done,” as some of the reasons she was chosen for the award.

The winner’s accomplishments: Ms. Ramdas has been with the fund since 1996 and has helped increase the group’s assets from $6-million in 1996 to $21-million, and has increased its annual grant making, which now stands at about $8-million a year.—Maria Di Mento
