Louisiana Court Rejects Private-School Voucher Program

A Baton Rouge judge ruled Friday that Louisiana’s plan for financing vouchers for students to attend private and parochial schools violates the state Constitution by relying on money intended solely for public schools, writes The New York Times.

Judge Timothy Kelley’s decision deals a setback to Gov. Bobby Jindal, who has made education reform—including vouchers and boosting charter schools—the centerpiece of his second-term agenda. The governor pushed legislation passed in March that would increase the share of the state’s education support that goes to vouchers.
