Mass. College Sells Campus in Debt Deal

Hebrew College will sell its Newton Centre, Mass., campus, which opened in 2001, as part of a deal with creditors to settle $32.1-million in debt, writes The Boston Globe.

Mortgage and maintenance costs for the building, designed by the well-known architect Moshe Safdie, exceeded the 89-year-old college’s fund-raising capacity. The 1,500-student college has cut its operating budget in half over the past three years.

After selling and vacating the property, Hebrew College will lease space at the neighboring Andover Newton Theological School, which sold the college the land for the campus.
