Mass. Service Charities Expand Lobbying
February 7, 2011
Human-services organizations in Massachusetts spent nearly four times as much lobbying state lawmakers in 2010 as they did five years earlier, the Associated Press writes.
As the recession sent legislators scrambling to make budget cuts, the amount service charities spent trying to convince them to spare their programs increased from $1.3-million in 2005 to $3-million in 2009 and $4.9-million last year.
Charity advocates say the state’s belt-tightening requires them to do more research and provide lawmakers with hard data about the contributions of nonprofit groups.
