The charitable arm of insurance and financial services firm MetLife announced plans Thursday to spend $200-million over five years on efforts to bring “financial inclusion” to low-income communities in Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and the United States.
The MetLife Foundation program will direct grants to nonprofit banking and community-development groups to deliver services such as savings, insurance, and credit to underserved communities, along with expert help on financial planning.
“People in poverty manage what little they have with tremendous ingenuity and resourcefulness … and we’re convinced that access to modern financial know-how and a range of services that fit their needs can transform their lives,” Dennis White, the foundation’s chief executive, said in a statement.
