‘Mission-Oriented’ Komen Founder Now Faces Test

The Washington Post profiles Nancy Brinker, founder of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, as the nation’s biggest breast-cancer charity seeks to pull itself out of the controversy over the awarding of grants to Planned Parenthood.
Ms. Brinker, who built the Komen foundation and its pink-ribbon symbol into global icons of support for cancer survivors and the search for a cure, is described by acquaintances as savvy and driven, qualities some say will help her and the charity weather the storm over Komen’s decision to pull and then reinstate grants to Planned Parenthood.
“She’s very mission-oriented,” said Wayne Berman, a lobbyist and friend of the Komen chief. “She’s not wallowing in regret, self-pity, or doubt. She’s just focusing on the task at hand.”
Ms. Brinker declined to comment for the article.
