Mississippi Government Plans to Review Nonprofit Rolls

April 22, 2010

Mississippi’s secretary of state will quiz charities on their fund raising and other activities as part of its review of the 38,000 nonprofit organizations registered with the state, writes the Associated Press.

Delbert Hosemann said his office will mail letters to the listed groups to ascertain which remain legitimate nonprofit agencies. “We need to know these groups are doing right” by Mississippians, he said.

State legislation adopted last year eased the regulatory burden on Mississippi charities but also strengthened the secretary of state’s hand in dealing with scofflaw organizations.
