Money and Science Fuel Howard Buffett’s Farm Philanthropy

NPR reports on farmer and philanthropist Howard Buffett’s work to improve agricultural techniques in hopes of boosting food production and alleviating hunger.

Mr. Buffett—the son of billionaire investor and donor Warren Buffett, who has provided about $2-billion for the Howard G. Buffett Foundation—has established research farms in Arizona, Illinois, and South Africa that work on improvements in irrigation, planting techniques, and soil content that can be passed on to poor farmers.

While his efforts in the past have largely focused on the developing world, in the past year he has turned his attention to domestic anti-hunger efforts, including an initiative with food charity Feeding America to encourage farmers to donate an acre or more of their crop proceeds to local food banks.

“Eliminating hunger in America is doable, because we have the resources to do it,” he told NPR.
