More Nonprofit Mass. Insurers Mull End to Board Pay

Two more nonprofit Massachusetts health insurers are considering ending annual stipends for members of their boards, The Boston Globe reports.
The boards of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Tuft Health Plan will meet later this month to discuss whether to pay the annual stipends, which are typically five figures. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts decided Tuesday to suspend payments to its directors amid intense public criticism of the stipends and an $11-million severance package for the company’s former CEO.
Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office is finishing up a 16-month investigation of nonprofit board compensation, and she is expected to recommend that nonprofit boards end the practice of paying their members.
