Mormon Group Starts Information Effort on Church Beliefs

As a Broadway hit and the presidential race cast a brighter spotlight on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a Mormon nonprofit group is starting a campaign to education journalists, politicians, and others in the church’s tenets, says the Associated Press.
Started by the Foundation for Apologetic Information & Research, the Mormon Defense League seeks to explain the history and theology of the Utah-based church and dispel myths such as the idea that it still sanctions polygamy, said Scott Gordon, the foundation’s president.
Mr. Gordon said the league will monitor news reporting on the church and post responses and explanations of Mormonism on its Web site.
Neither group is directly affiliated with the 14-million-member Mormon church, but a church spokesman said it welcomes “sincere efforts to correct misconceptions and inaccuracies.”
The church is the subject of the Tony Award-winning musical The Book of Mormon, and Mormons Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman are seeking the Republican presidential nomination.
