N.C. United Way Pays $700,000 to Ousted CEO

United Way of Central Carolinas will pay a $700,000 settlement to end a legal battle with its former executive director, Gloria Pace King, who was fired amid a public outcry over her seven-figure pay, reports the Charlotte Observer.
Ms. King was ousted in 2008 following media reports that she received $1.2-million in wages and benefits from the charity. Her lawsuit charging she was unfairly fired, which sought more than $2-million in back pay and other compensation, was to go to trial in 2012.
The United Way will pay one-third of the settlement amount out of investment revenue and donor dollars from past campaigns, with the rest covered by liability insurance. The charity said the cost of pursuing the case in court would have exceeded the United Way’s payment to settle.
